The Grand Route des Alpes starts at the south shore of Lake Geneva (Lac Lemán if you’re French) and winds south and ends up at at Menton on the Italian border. Tough enough on modern machinery over two days. Much more challenging in 1911 when it was completed with what was available then…

Stelio remains a civil engineering masterpiece but (quiet whisper) one of my least favourite roads. Too tight to get any rhythm going and - when the weather is good - packed with cyclists, clawing their way to the top. Has to be done though…
